This exercise follows on from *Down*.It is a useful one, especially now that so many foot shops forbid dogs on their premises. The trainer gets the dog into the *Stay* position by giving the command to Stay once the *Down* has been achieved .He then backs off from the dog,all the time commanding *stay*.If the dog moves he is at once got back into *Down*. It will be found possible gradually to increase the distance between pupil and trainer, eventually to go completely out of sight without the dog stirring from the spot. |

At this point it is advisable to recommend Staffordshire owners that whereas this lesson should be given,it should not be applied overmuch. No Staffordshire Bull Terrier should be left unattended, uncontrolled in any public place. Loose street dogs are likely to interfere with him to his annoyance, and who could blame him if he grabs one? A Stafford should be under ownercontrol always. This is a fighting breed. It might take a good deal to upset or provoke a Stafford these days, but even the best get put out at times and it is usually the Stafford who gets the blame in a dogfight, often through no fault of his own.
