This quaint little dog has a captivating monkey like expression, and is one of the oldest toy in Europe, dating back to about the seventeenth century. Known as the Black Devil, he originated in Germany. Full of mischief, he is lively little character, very affectionate, and his comical antics make him a most amusing companion.Hr has a rough, harsh textured coatwhich requires very little care and no trimming. Dark, sparkling eyes, set off by a halo of hair which stands away from his face, given him his unique expression. He adapts to city or country living, and is an ideal size for in the house.

Characteristics The Affenpinscher is a balanced, little, wiry-haired terrier - like toy dog whose intelligence and demeanormake it a good house pet. Originating i Germany,where the name Affenpinscher means Monkey like terrier, the breed was developed to rid the kitchens,granaries and stables of rodents In the France the breed is described as the diablotin moustachu or the moustached little devil. Both these names help to decribe the appearance and attitude of this delightful breed.

Head and skull, Eyes, Ears. Fairly small in prportion, to body; Domed forehead, broad brown and marked stop which is not indented. Muzzle blunt and short but not flattened sufficiently to cuase difficulty in breathing or wrikling of skin. Chin prominent with good turn up. Distance between dark eyes and black nose forming en equal sided triangle. Eyes Round, very dark and sprankling, Medium in size and not protruding. Ears Small, set high, upright earspreferred, although a neat drop ear is permissible.

Mouth slightly undershot with lower incisors gripping scissor like in front of uppers. Teeth or tongue not showing when mouth closed. Neck Short and straight. Skin of trroat tight and unwrinkled. ForeQuarters Front legs straight, elbows neither in nor out carried close to sides.

HindQuarters, Feet
Body* back short and straight. Height at withers about equal to the length of back. Well sprung ribs with chest not too deep, combined with only as slight tuck - up at loin giving a sturdy appearance. Hindqaurters* Hindlegs well set under body without excessive angulation. Feet* Small, round and compact turning neither in nor out. Pads and nails dark.

| Gait &
Movement, Tail, Coat.
A lively,strutting movement. Lifting feet high when in motion, with no hint of hackneyed action or plaiting. Tail* Set high and carried high, left a natural length to curve gently over back when moving. Coat* Correct coat needs no trimming, rough and harsh in texture,short and dense on some parts of body and shaggy on others. In particular, longer on shoulders, nrck and head where loose shaggy hair stands away from skull framing eyes, nose and chin giving desired moneky-like appearance.

Training, Color, Size, Faults, Note, Training* Affenpinschers learn commands fairly quickly. Ensure cosistency in the training but make sure There is ample variety in the drills so your dog will not become bored. Color* Black preferable, but grey shading permissible. Size The shoulders - height is 25 - 30 cm (93/4 - 11 3/4 in). Faults Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which te fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree. Note* Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Social Behavvior &
Exercise
Affenpinschers get on well with the children, and can also be fine with there own sort, and other household pets. If you have visitors who are not known to your dog, the Affenpinscher may refuse to let them in without a great deal of reassurance. Exercise* This breed is happy if you take it for a quick trot around the corner three times a day. If you alsoplay with it regularly, thenits happiness is complete. Care ReQuired* It may be necessary to pluck the Affenpinscher"s coat. This is usually done by a dog trimmer specialist but it is possible to learn how to do it yourself. The hair should never be clipped because this ruins the coat for many years. Hairs sometimes grow in the corners of the eyes, causing irritation; these should be dealt with promptly.
