Amdo Tibetan Mastiff

Considered to be a variant of the Tibetan Mastiff, this rare breed is also known as the dog of the Amdo people of Tibet. Primarily a Nomadic settlement protector and watchdog, the mighty Amdo Mastiff also makes a capable herder and hunting dog. Said to be very aggressive and independent, this massive working dog is not suited for urban life. The influence of the Amdo blood is evident in certain strains of the Do-Khyi which are said to exhibit temperament and trainability difficulties.
Rugged, muscular and larger than most Tibetan dogs, the Amdo Mastiff belongs to a typical "bear" type of mountain dogs. In comparison to the western-bred Do-Khyi, the Amdo has a shorter snout and a wider head, as well as a more squarely built body frame. Its rich dense undercoat makes this longhaired Moloss perfectly suited for harsh climates of Tibet, but can be a problem during the summer months in warmer countries. Most dogs are black, brown or grey, always with tan and white markings. The average height is around 30 inches.
