American Cane Corso

Orgin
Medium-large
sized molossoid, sturdy, compact, with a strong skeleton, muscular and
athletic, it moves with considerable ease. Its head is massive, with a
dignified and proud expression. It has had a selection parallel to that
of the mastiff, it comes from lighter progenitors but has maintained
that original conformation. It has always been a property watchdog and
hunter of difficult game, such as the boar. It originated in the
central-southern regions of Italy where it was used as a cowherd for
cows and swine raised in the wild. It also defended travellers and
carters from highwaymen. Its name is the one by which it has always been
known in the south, having the same root as "corsiero" (courser),
the medieval war horse; perhaps it derives from the Latin "cohors"
(courtyard, body guard). Due to environmental changes, the Courser
risked extinction. A few enthusiasts initiated its recovery which today
is complete. Its modern functions are watchdog, defending people and
their belongings. An adaptable and courageous worker, of proverbial
loyalty, alert and reactive, who is able to withstand difficult
environmental conditions and experiences due to its solid equilibrium,.
A strong build but not without elegance. Built on a rectangle, it
absolutely must not resemble the Neapolitan Mastiff. Its skin adheres to
its body and does not form wrinkles.

Out
Italian frontier, the country where the Cane Corso Italiano is more
present is the U.S.
We can think that every year about 3.000 Cane Corso add themselves at
the existing population. The Association more (much more) representative
(and active) is the I.C.C.F International Cane Corso Federation with
seat in New Jersey, the President is Mr. Michael Ertaskiran. The
association is organized with a territorial decentralization (ICCF
contacts).

The
firsts Cane Corso imports in America were at the end of the years 80;
this subject coming from Italy (with uncertain origin) were the basis
for the selection, subsequently influenced by other import from Europe (principally
from Italy). The great distance between U.S. and Italy didn't favor the
communications, for this the information arrived in U.S. were no
controlled, often imprecise or wrong. The American breeder tried to
solve this want with the analysis of their dogs, drafting a standard
with the help of the Association to have a precise reference for the
breeding.

|

|
In
this manner ICCF standard was born. This standard define a type of Corso
substantially different from the Corso defined in F.C.I. standard. Like
you can see the two standard are much different especially in the head
the part of the dog that more of the others determine the type. About
the height and the weight we can say that the American Cane Corso have
on the average more height and weight. This difference of type have
determined a great confusion in the world, because the Americans are
much active on internet and they have a great contact in the world
because their important country offer much different chances. Our
dog-love association was not be able to refer with this situation, in
fact the contacts with the Italian breed club lasted only a year without
significant results. The A.I.C.C. have tried recently to recover the
contact with the American association, with the knowledge that a few
year from recognition is in action a serious division in the breed, with
great damages for the Cane Corso and the image of the Italian official
dog lover kennel club that show problem in his tutelage functions of the
Italian breeds.

|

|
Retake
the contacts with ICCF didn't seem easy, because ICCF direction had a
strong position against the Italian official club. In a letter the ICCF
president had wrote that if the SACC remain the Italian official breed
club, they will go on to their own way. The direction member of AICC
strong in their good reason, have continued in the contact, trying with
humility to understand the reality of the breed in U.S. and transfer (however
possible) their knowledge. This behavior was be much appreciated in ICCF
ambient, they consider AICC a serious association that work in favor of
the Cane Corso breed, without hegemonic behavior. A this point a
collaboration started between ICCF and AICC, so much that the history in
ICCF web site is written by me and the article on Cane Corso in
Montopoli published on this magazine is present too. If this fact my be
of great significance to AICC and Cane Corso lover, permit me to
remember the capability, the far-sighted and the courage of the
President Mr. Michael Ertaskiran. He have understood the importance to
draw near the two type of Cane Corso for have in a next future a type
only, for this ICCF have constituted a committee to do a serene
verification of the ICCF standard.

|

|
About
this I can say that the proposal expressed by the President Mr.
Ertaskiran define a Cane Corso very near at our, producing in the same
time a compatibility of type into the two standard. The importance of
this event (if it will happen), is possible understand reading again the
parameter of the two standard, shown before. In this context to develop
ulteriorly the good relations and to verify the reality of the American
breeding, an AICC delegation will be in visit at Washington in the first
days of June at one of the most important show organized by ICCF. I
think that this initiative is the best testimony of our appreciation to
the ICCF 's engagement; for this the American passionate of the ICCF can
be cited like example to show disposability and engage in favor of the
Cane Corso breed. About this event (trip in Washington) in the next
number of Cani da Presa magazine will be presented an ample reportage.
