The standard was once an excellent farm worker. Nowadays they have lost their popularity to the Pomeranian which is almost identical to this breed. In fact, the Spitz is often called by this name by mistake. When trained, this breed is elegant in the show ring. 
The Spitz is most often white in colour. But it may also come in other solid colours - brown and black.
