Japanese Spitz  

Yet another of the growing army of Spiz breeds being seen in the UK in ever increasing numbers. In a mere ten years regisstrations have risen from nought to 150 per year, and are growing fast. This is hardly surprising as his startlingly white coat and bold, affectionate nature make him an attractive household pet. In addition he is never lost for a word and will indicate the presence of invaders in a forceful manner. Like many of his type, his profuse stand-off coat and his thick underlay need hearty attention on regular basis, but this does not mean that a new owner is condemming himself to hard labour for life. A small, nimble dog, he damands neither excessive feeding nor exercise

Characteristics **Affectionate, companionable. Slightly chary at first meeting with strangers.

Temperament **  Alert, intelligent, bold and very livey.

Head and Skull ** Head medium size, without coarseness; moderately broad, slightly rounded> Skull broadest at occiput; well defined stop; forehead not protruding. Muzzle pointed, neither too thick nor too long. Lips firm, tightly closed, black. Nose round, small and black.

Ears ** Small, angular, standing erect. Set high, facing forward, not to wide apart.

Mouth **  Jaws strong and with perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Neck **  Strong, arched and of moderate length.

Body **  Chest broad and deep. Ribs powerfully sprung; belly moderately firm with a good tuckup. Back straight and short. Loins broad and firm. Croup slightly arched.

HindQuarters **  Well proportioned and balenced. Musscular, moderately angulated. Hindlegs parallel to each other veiwed from rear.

Feet **  Small round, cat-like and well cushioned. Pads black, nails preferably dark.

Gait / Movement **  Light, nimble, active, energaticc and very smooth.

Coat **  Outer coat straight and stand - off. Pro fuse, short, dense undercoat, soft in texture. Shorter on face, ears, front of fore - and hindlegs and  below hocks. Remainder of body covered with long coat. Mane on neck and shoulders reaching down to brisket. Tail profusely covered with long hair.

Colour **  Pure white.

Faults **  Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.

Note **  Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully desended into the scrotum.
