Spitz dogs are descended from Stone Age peat dogs (Canis familiaris palustris), through Neolithic lacustrine spitz dogs. They are, therefore, one of the oldest domestic breeds, descended from lupoid dogs. There are numerous spitz varieties:- Wolfspitz, also known as the Keeshond, is the largest variety measuring 45 to 55 cm.- Giant Spitz (Grosspitz) measuring 42 to 50 cm.- Standard Spitz (Mittlespitz) measuring 30 to 38 cm.- Small Spitz (Kleinspitz) measuring 23 to 29 cm- Toy Spitz (Zwergspitz) measuring 18 to 22 cm.The Wolfspitz first became popular in the Netherlands where it was named the Keeshond after W. Kees, the Dutch leader who revolted in the seventeenth century against the House of Orange. The Keeshond later became popular in the United States. The Small and Toy Spitz have been called Pomeranian Loulous after the Baltic region where some spitz were developed. APPEARANCE CHARACTERISTICS* The German Spitz is intelligent, active and alert. Its buoyancy, independence and devotion to the family are the breed characteristics. Temperament* Happy, equable disposition, showing confidence, with no sign of nervousness or aggression.

and Skull Nose* Black in black, white, black/white parti-colours, black/tan bi-colours, self-colour as compatible with coat colour in other colour varieties. Never parti colour or pink.

Ears * Small, triangular and set rather high. Perfectly erect.

| Mouth
Neck * Clean, moderately short and well set into the shoulders.

| Forequarters
Body * Loins moderately short, body compact. Chest fairly deep and not too wide in front. Well ribbed up and rounded. Level topline. Moderate tuck-up at loins. Hindquarters* Moderate angulation with hocks moderately well let down. Neither cow hocked nor wide behind. Rear dew claws removed if they occur, removal of front dew claws optional.

Tail* High set, curled right up from root, lying curled over back. Gait/Movement* Moving straight, cleanly and briskly, with good drive. The action covering plenty of ground. Size* 29 cm - 35.5 cm (11.5 - 14 in). Dogs preferably larger than bitches. Colour: All colour varieties and marking acceptable
