Majestic Tree Hound

History
Throughout the years, superb
strains of American coonhound breeds have occurred as Chien de
Saint-Hubert blood has been added. These strains again disappeared
though as subsequent outcrossings diluted the percentage of Chien de
Saint-Hubert genes. The Majestic Tree Hound is a reconstitution of these
strains. Any crossing of a Chien de Saint-Hubert and a breed of
coonhound may be registered as a Majestic Tree Hound provided that the
standard is met.
In 1979, Lee Newhart, Jr. decided to preserve the Majestic Tree Hound
separately from other coonhounds and formed the National Majestic Tree
Hound Association. This was followed shortly thereafter by recognition
of the National Kennel Club (NKC) in April of 1980.

Appearance
The Majestic Tree Hound is a large, powerful breed of scent hound. Males
range in height from 26 to 30 inches (66.04 to 76.2 cm) at the withers,
while females stand from 24.5 to 30 inches (62.23 to 76.2 cm) tall. The
greater height is preferred as long as all other qualities remain equal.
Males in good working condition weigh from 80 to 110 pounds (36.29 to
49.9 kg). Females in good working condition range in weight from 75 to
100 pounds (34.02 to 45.36 kg). The head is narrow in proportion to its
length and long in proportion to the body. The head tapers only slightly
towards the nose. The length from the nose to the stop should not be
less than the length from the stop to the occiput. The stop is set
between the eyes. The foreface is long, deep, and even in width. The
lips fall squarely in the front. From behind, the lips form deep hanging
flews that continue as loose folds of skin down the neck to form a
dewlap. These characteristics also occur in females although to a lesser
degree. The Majestic Tree Hound may have either a level or a scissor
bite. The nose may be black or self-colored according to the coat. The
nostrils are large and open. The eyes are deep sunk and correspond in
color to that of the coat, from deep hazel to yellow. The low-set ears
are thin and soft to the touch. The ears fall in graceful folds with the
lower parts curling inwards and backwards. The Majestic Tree Hound has
extremely long ears with minimum earage of 24 inches (60.96 cm) for
males and 23 inches (58.42 cm) for females. The neck is long. The
shoulders are muscular and well sloped backwards. The chest is well let
down between the forelegs. The ribs are well sprung. The loins are deep
slightly arched. The forelegs are straight and heavy in bone. The hind
legs are muscular. The feet are strong and well knuckled up. The tail is
high-set, long, and tapered. The coat is short, thick, and dense. The
Majestic Tree Hound may occur in any color or combination of color.

Personality
and Uses The Majestic Tree Hound is used primarily as a big game hound
to hunt mountain lions, bear, bobcats, and jaguars. They also make
exceptional coonhounds, when the criterion is not solely based on speed
and numbers treed since they are not fast workers but instead work well
at their own pace. The Majestic Tree Hound works well over rugged
terrain and is also noted for its endurance, persistence, and cold
trailing ability. They are extremely affectionate and get along with
other dogs. The Majestic Tree Hound accepts both praise and correction
equally.
