Mastino Napoletano

History

There is so much told about the history of the breed. My contribution to this item for you is to look at the photo's of this century. They will tell you more about the evolution in the breed. The oldest photo of the Mastino I found, is from 1898. In the 1920's you could find little mastini like this one. The farmers in Italy in the 1930's had Mastini like these. After World War II there were a few Mastini left. Piero Scanziani was the one who saved the Mastino from dieing out. He introduced the breed to a show in the late 1940's. He is the father of the Mastino. All the friends of the Mastino Napoletano has to thank Piero Scanziani for this wonderful breed, because without him this breed had not exist anymore. From the legendary couple "Pacchiana" and "Guaglione I " only one female Mastino could be used for breeding , who became the matriarch of the "Villanova"-Mastini and ancestor of many champions. His Mastino Guaglione became patriarch of the breed.

The late Mario Querci from Prato near Florence with his famous kennels "di Ponzano" was the one with most Mastino Napoletano champions . A friend of Mario Querci , Clemente Biondo from Cancello gave Querci a female Mastino Napoletano called "Fiamma" as a gift with the promise of a female puppy of the first litter. In Querci's hands Fiamma became the first female Mastino Napoletano crowned Italian Champion in 1953 following the first male - Scanziani's " Guaglione I " in 1949.

In 1951 Francesco De Lucia from Resina (which is near Pompei) gave Querci a Mastino pup. His name was Toto-Guaglione to distinguish him from countless other Guaglioni since the name, like the dog, became profilic. He became Italian Champion in 1953.Thus he was the second male to be crowned with the title after Scanziani's "Guaglione I".
