established in 1995 is a registered
non-profit charitable organization of volunteers dedicated to finding
responsible, loving homes for ex-racing Greyhounds that are unable to
make the grade at the tracks throughout the United States. Our aim is to
further the understanding of what excellent, loving pets these noble
creatures make.
The Greyhound has a wonderful
temperament, friendly and refined, as gentle with children as they are
affectionate with adults. These dogs are empathetic and social by nature
and thrive on attention and human companionship. This is a serene,
mannerly breed blessed with an advanced sense of humour, as those who
have adopted a Greyhound from the track would heartily agree. For centuries Greyhounds have been
bred to hunt by outrunning their prey. They are second only to the
Cheetah in speed and in full stride are breathtaking! Greyhounds can
accelerate to a speed of 40 MPH within seconds and must never be let off
lead unless in a secured fenced-in area. Because of their fine coat and lack
of body fat, Greyhounds must be considered house dogs. They are
comfortable where you are comfortable, in a heated or air-conditioned
home, on the couch, or in a soft, plump corner of their own. Niagara Greyhound Adoption Inc.
incurs considerable expense with every Greyhound that passes through its
adoption program. The adoption fee is $425.00. Please send the
non-refundable process fee of $25.00 with application. The balance of
$400.00 is due when you receive your greyhound. This adoption fee
assists and allows us to make the following provisions for these
wonderful pets: It helps to cover a full physical examination from the
veterinarian, all vaccinations, the spaying or neutering, teeth cleaning,
tick testing, worming, heartworm test and six months worth of prevention
(HeartGard Plus ?), new safety collar and lead, I.D. tag, placement
package, transportation from the track and dog food for the foster
program. Other expenses such as photocopies,
phone bills, extra veterinarian costs, etc. are covered through our
constant fundraising efforts. In addition, every Greyhound is fully groomed upon arrival from the track. While in a foster home they are evaluated for personality and tested with children and cats. This valuable process enables us to match a dog with the intended adopter and gives the dog a foundation before going into its new home. Every Greyhound and its owner receive on-going support through the adjustment period and life-long support after adopting a Greyhound from our organization. NGA also offers the opportunity to meet other Greyhound owners through a variety of events and activities throughout the year.
