Mr. Toepoel rebuilded the breed after World War II, together with a small group of caring people. Was it reconstruction or were they creating a new breed ? There is a reference to similar looking dog from 1920. There are also references to breeds as 'Herdersdoes', 'Siephound' or 'Olde Grise'. They came from Drenthe (North of Holland) according to a shepherd in 1930. There is a painting of Conradijn Cunaeus (1825-1895) which pictures a similar looking dog. The lack of paintings is explained by Toepoel in his encyclopidia as follows: The shepherds only kept dark colored dogs and the painters found those dogs not colorful enough.

CHARACTERISTICS *** The Schapendoes is meant for working on the moor. He needs staying-power, because he has to work long days indifficult circumstances. He is not an hunter, but should be smart enough to herd the sheeps. Since herding did not provide much money, the dogs did not get much food. The standard is followed by the breeders since 1954, although it was not officially recognized by the FCI then. The dog is not a conformation type, they should stay working type dogs. The Does is a light build, long haired dog between 40 and 50 cm on the shoulders. He is very agile and a remarkable jumper, thanks to his light bones. They may not be "death", nor nervous, but should be excited instead. They also have to be brave and an anxious dog is disqualified in the conformation ring.
