GENERAL APPEARANCE
Black terriers are above average in size. They are strong dogs with
massive muscles and bones. Skin is compact and elastic, without wrinkles
and loose skin. Dogs of this breed are protective if necessary,
distrustful of strangers and resilient. They adapt well to different
climatic zones and are easily trained.
CONSTITUTION:
Sturdy and robust FORMAT INDEX 100-105 (height at the withers compared to the lengths of
the body , measured fromt the point of the shoulder to the point of the
buttock)
HEIGHT AT THE WITHERS:
66-72 cm for males
64-70 cm. for females
TERMPERAMENT:
Alert, strong, even-minded, lively and with active defence reactions.
CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO SEX:
Differences between sexes are clearly visible. Males are bigger, more
masculine and more massive then females.
COAT:
Rough, harsh, abundant and thick. Ruffled hair is long 4-10 cm (about 2
to 4 inches). and covers the body. Mustache and beard very thick, upper
side of the muzzle rough, brush-shaped whiskers and chin with heavy
beard. Eyebrows are rough and bushy. Long, mane-like coat on neck and
shoulders. Forearms up to elbows and hind legs up to thighs are covered
by a rough, long coat. Undercoat is harsh and well developed.
COLOUR:
Black or black with grey hairs.
HEAD:
Long, with moderately broad skull and rounded cheekbones. Forehead is
flat. Stop marked, but not too accentuated. The top line of the muzzle
is parallel to the top line of the skull. Muzzle broad, strong,
wellfilled out, tapering gradually towards the nose; it‘s length is
slightly shorter than the lengths of the skull. Mustache and beard
create that square look on the muzzle. Lips are thick and fleshy; dry
and tight fitting.
EARS:
Placed high on the skull, pendant, small, triangular in shape with the
inner edge lying tightly against the cheekbone.
EYES:
Small, oval, slanted, and dark. TEETH: Strong, white and healthy, with the incisors meeting in a scissors
bite.
NECK:Long, powerful and clean-cut. Forms a 40/45° angle to the horizontal
line of the back.
CHEST:Wide and deep with well sprung ribs, descending to the elbows or even
lower.
ABDOMEN: tight, tucked up. SHOULDERS
High, well marked over the horizontal line of the back.
BACK:Straight, wide and muscular. LOIN: Short, wide, muscular and slightly
arched.
CROUP:
Wide, muscular and somewhat sloping to a high set tail. TAIL:
High set, if docked leaving 3 or 4 vertebrae.
FOREARMS
Viewed either in profile or from the front are perfectly straight,
parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground. Upper arm joins
shoulder blade at a 110° angle. Elbows point straight back. Lower arms
straight and strong. Pasterns short and straight.
HIND LEGS:
Seen from the back, limbs are straight and parallel to each other, set
slightly wider apart then front limbs. The upper thigh is muscular and
well developed. The lower thigh is long and set at a right angles to the
upper thigh. Hocks lean and well developed. Rear pastern strong, long
and nearly perpendicular to the ground.
FEET:
Big, well arched and rounded. GAIT: Harmoniously proportioned to allow
for a free gait. Gentle trot and gallop are typical gaits. In a trot
legs move in a straight line, with forelegs moving slightly close to the
medium line. Back and loin have an elastic movement.
Faults***
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and
the seriousness should with which the fault should be regarded should be
in exact proportion to its degree.
Note***
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended
into the scrotum.
