Tatra Mountain Sheepdog

History

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog, originated in the Podhale, in the Tatra Mountain region of Poland, near the high range of the Carpathian Mountains in southern Poland. The big, white mountain dogs probably come from Mastiff dogs, which came to Europe from Asia, and Tibet. They have existed in Polish mountains for thousands years. Developed as a livestock guardian, the breed is also used for personal protection, as guard dogs for private property, for military and police work and carting.  Although the breed had most likely existed for hundreds of years in Poland, the advance of mountaineering in the mid-19th century brought them to the attention of the outside world.  The breed was left almost extinct as a result of World War II.   The Tatra Mountain Sheepdog originates from Poland, a cross between the Polish mastiffs and Carpathian Mountain dogs. It is a breed that has stayed very pure due to the isolated area, Podhale in the Tatra Mountains, it lived in until the late 1800’s. It was a mountain guide dog whose tail was used as a handhold during blinding snowstorms. The Tatra Mountain Sheepdog prefers to live in the wide open outdoors, faring best in cooler climates. It makes a good family dog that blends well with children, is wary of strangers and can be aggressive towards other dogs. It has an excellent overall intelligence level, above average problem solving ability, and excellent ability to learn and obey commands. It is a favorite for use in police work. The Tatra Mountain Sheepdog has a coat of long, dense, harsh fur that is white in color. It does shed and needs regular grooming. This breed with its powerful build, triangular ears and pointed snout reaches a height of 34 inches and weighs up to 150 pounds.

COAT  The hair is short on the head and on the front of the legs; elsewhere, it is thicker and longer.  Both straight and curly hair are permitted by the breed standard.  The color is always white without markings.

CARE REQUIRED:  Except during the time when the dog is shedding little attention is needed to maintain the coat on this dog, which does not readily tangle.  During shedding this breed needs regular grooming with brush and comb to remove loose and dead hair.

CHARACTER    Quiet, well-balanced, sociable, brave, obedient, intelligent, loyal, watchful, and affectionate.  These dogs, unlike some other breeds are not independent.

TRAINING:  The Tatra requires a handler who has an air of calm control. Training needs to be consistent and conducted in peace and harmony.  Treating these dogs severely works counter-productively.  The breed can be somewhat stubborn and refuse to obey commands to which they see no point.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR    Tatra Mountain Sheepdogs generally get on well with other pets, dogs and children.  They will take the side of your children if play with other children becomes rough.  They are somewhat reserved towards strangers.

EXERCISE:  This is an outdoor dog which really is not suitable for an apartment or even a suburban home with a small yard.  The coat protects it from all kinds of weather.  Regular long walks are much to its liking but it is not interested in playing ball games or such.  The Tatra Mountain Sheepdog can cope perfectly well in a kennel outside provided it gets sufficient daily exercise and attention.

Temperament    Polish Tatra Sheepdogs are calm, intelligent and alert
With Children: Gentle, caring and good with children
With Pets: In working conditions does well with other dogs may tend to try to herd other animals.

Care and Exercise    Grooming is moderate with occasional brushings.
Training: With quiet and gentle treatment Polish Tatra Sheepdogs can be trained as companions, guard dogs and rescue dogs or all the above.  They can be a little stubborn and hate compulsion by shouting, scolding or physical force. They can literally be offended and may pretend to be blind and deaf.  Proper training requires consistency and determination in enforcing the desired behavior.
