Yankee Terrier 

 

             

History

The fighting Yankee - terrier breeds of the 1800s spawned the more peaceable Yankee - terrier . In its formative years, the breed was known as the Yankee Terrier, the Half-and-Half or the American Bull Terrier. It was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936 as the Staffordshire Terrier but the name was changed to American Staffordshire Terrier in 1972 to avoid confusing it with the smaller Staffordshire Bull Terrier

 

 

Temperament    Bright, alert and courageous, the Yankee - terrieris a great family pet, but, because of his terrier nature, early obedience training is recommended.

Activity level    No couch potato, the Yankee - terrierneeds regular outdoor exercise to maintain its solid, athletic condition.

Height/Weight   The average male measures about 18-19 in (46-48 cm) at the shoulder. Weight should be in proportion for this stocky dog.

Coat *The coat is short, stiff and glossy.

 

Colour   Any colour - solid, parti or patched - is permissible. All white or more than 80 per cent is frowned upon, as is black-and-tan or liver.

Grooming *Grooming needs are minimal.

 

Health Concerns   Yankee - terrieris prone to hip dysplasia and hereditary cataracts

Life * Expectancy   Yankee - terriercan be expected to live up to about

10-12 years.

 

Head Medium length with a broad skull. Cheek muscles are pronounced. Ears: Can be cropped or un-cropped. Un-cropped ears should be held rose or half pricked. Muzzle * Medium size and well proportioned to head. Nose* Black and self-colored according to coat. Bite: Scissor or level. Neck *  Medium length, tapering from shoulders to back of skull. Top-line * Level. Chest * Deep, strong, and broad. Body: Ribs are close together and well-sprung. Legs * Forelegs are set wide apart to permit development of chest. They should be straight. Hindquarters are well-muscled. Feet * Well arched and compact. Tail * Not docked. Short and low set, tapering to a point. Not held over back or curled. Movement * Quick, yet well balanced movements. Temperament * Fearless, loyal, and willing to please.

 

Height   17-24 In.

Coat *  Short And Smooth

Color * All Colors & Markings Acceptable

 

Faults    Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault an d the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.

Note * Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
